A.C.N.M. Foundation Awards

The following awards have been offered by the A.C.N.M. Foundation.  Please click on the links to review and print this year's application materials.

Dorothea M. Lang Pioneer Award ( Application Deadline extended to: April 30, 2010)

The Dorothea M. Lang Pioneer Award honors an exceptional CNM/CM who has been certified for ten years, has not been a recipient of the Hattie Hemschemeyer Award, and has demonstrated vision and leadership.

Louis E. Hellman Midwifery Partnership Award (Deadline April 16, 2010.)

The intention of this award is to recognize a physician who has been a champion/supporter of midwifery practice. Nominees for this award must be a fellow or junior fellow of ACOG. The awardee must have demonstrated:
1.) Excellence in clinical practice, education, administration and/or research focused on the health care of women
2. Leadership in health care for women through the collaboration of physicians and midwives, and
3. Advocacy for vulnerable and/or underserved women.
This is a joint award presented by the American College of Nurse-Midwives, the A.C.N.M. Foundation, and the Midwifery Business Network, and will be presented at the ACOG Annual Meeting, and the ACNM Annual Meeting.

 

Varney Participant Award (Application is due: April 16, 2010)

The Varney Participant Award is awarded to help student midwives attend the ACNM Annual Meeting, and receive mentoring from Mary C. Brucker, CNM, PhD, FACNM; Professor, Associate Dean and Graduate Program Director of the Baylor School of Nursing, an established leader in the field of midwifery. Eligible applicants must be enrolled as a student in good standing in an ACNM DOA accredited basic midwifery education program, have successfully completed one academic or clinical semester/quarter or clinical module, and be a current student member of the American College of Nurse-Midwives (ACNM).

W. Newton Long Award (Application is due: April 16, 2010)

This award is intended for midwives (CNMs or CMs) seeking funding for projects which relate to the advancement of nurse-midwifery.  The following types of activities may be eligible for this award:  Advancement of nurse-midwifery clinical skills; advancement of nurse-midwifery through research; dissemination of nurse-midwifery research; promotion of professional nurse-midwifery; presentations at medical or nurse-midwifery conferences; establishment of new nurse-midwifery practices/services; and/or study of different aspects of nurse-midwifery practice in the U.S. and abroad.

Excellence in Teaching Award (Application is due May 7, 2010)

The A.C.N.M. Foundation Excellence in Teaching Award will honor one teacher in every ACNM pre-accredited/accredited education program each year. The Board of Trustees will confer the award to the candidate selected by the students in each program. One person may be selected from each program each year. The award honors excellence in teaching.  A list of all previous award recipients can be found here.

Susan Stein Scholarship Award (Application Due: May 15, 2010)
The Susan Stein Scholarship Fund was established and inspired by Susan Stein.  Passionate about helping people make choices and educating women, Susan was touched by the healthcare system at an early age watching her mother struggle with Breast Cancer.  Through her lifelong and personal journey with cancer, midwifery became a framework for high quality, empowering care.  To honor her experience, Susan set up a scholarship fund to support midwifery students who have been personally affected by breast cancer. 

 

2009 Hazel Corbin/Childbirth Connection Grant for Evidence-Based Midwifery Care  (To be awarded fall 2010)

The Hazel Corbin/Childbirth Connection Grant for Evidence-Based Midwifery Care honors the memory and leadership of the A.C.N.M Foundation’s first President, Hazel Corbin, RN, who was also a long-time general director of the Maternity Center Association (now Childbirth Connection) and one of ACNM's first honorary members. This exciting grant will support or augment outstanding projects that foster knowledge of the safety and/or effectiveness of midwifery practices for mothers and newborns and application of this knowledge, especially projects that reflect highest international standards for evidence-based practice. High-quality applications from midwives and other professionals from a wide range of settings are welcome. Applicants must adhere to clearly described guidelines in the application. 

2010 Thacher Leadership Development Award  (Application due August 31, 2010)

The purpose of this award is to assist ACNM members to improve leadership skills in business management and marketing of midwifery practices.

The award is a monetary grant to help cover the costs of attending the Midwifery Business Network meeting in Denver, Colorado, from October 22-25, 2009.

A.C.N.M. Foundation Community Grant Awards (Next award dates TBD)

These grants are intended to support community projects that are designed or created to promote excellence in health care for women, infants and families worldwide. This award is ideal for retired midwives, midwives caring for underserved populations, and community activists.

 

Basic Midwifery Student Scholarship (Not available in 2010)

The Foundation awards basic midwifery education scholarships in annually in May. The applicants are judged on academic and financial need criteria.

 

Midwives of Color-Watson Scholarship (Not available in 2010)

The Midwives of Color-Watson Scholarship is a Basic Midwifery Student Scholarship supported out of dedicated funds intended to support the educational careers of student midwives of color.  Please note, all applicants are reviewed for the Basic Midwifery Student Scholarships without regard for race or ethnicity. The Foundation uses the same criteria of academic achievement and financial need to determine all scholarship awards. However, by providing this information to the A.C.N.M. Foundation, you may also become eligible for a scholarship from this additional source of funds. 

A.C.N.M. Foundation Fellowship for Graduate Education (Not available in 2010)

The ACNM Foundation Fellowship for Graduate Education award is made to a midwife actively enrolled in doctoral or post-doctoral studies.

 

Deanne R. Williams Public Policy Fellowship (applications not currently being accepted)

This award supports the creation of a white paper that revisits and reframes the evidence collected over time that documents the safety, cost effectiveness and unique contributions of midwifery care as provided by CNMs and CMs.

Bonnie Westenberg Pedersen International Midwife Award ( Not offered in 2010)
To honor the memory of Bonnie Westenberg Pedersen by providing an award to an international midwife to encourage her/him to follow Bonnie's path of leadership, vision and significant contributions to the profession of midwifery and international reproductive health, particularly in developing countries.
